Year-Round News & Updates on the Minnesota Timberwolves
The Timberwolves are going to have to learn how to play without their playmaking guard Ricky Rubio.
This was the exact scenario I worried about when the Wolves decided to buy out J.J. Barea's contract just a couple weeks ago. Now, they have just Mo Williams and Zach LaVine to play point guard. Is Zach LaVine ready for the added responsibility and play time? He'll have to be. He's the new starting point guard and he'll see plenty of playing time because Flip Saunders has already said that he'll likely only play Mo Williams 20-25 minutes a game. Saunders says that LaVine is likely to remain the starting point guard--he likes playing LaVine with that first unit and continue letting Mo run the second unit--where he (Mo) has to be the primary scorer/facilitator. Saunders says the team has no plans to add a third point guard and they'll go forward with those two running the show. Rubio will be on crutches for the next 10-14 days. After that time he'll be re-evaluated. That will give the swelling in the ankle time to go down--so the team can make a better prognosis of just how long he'll be out.
