Year-Round News & Updates on the Minnesota Timberwolves
The Portland Trailblazers have officially matched Minnesota's offer sheet for restricted free agent Nicolas Batum, keeping him in Portland.
The Blazers will pay him $46.5million for the next four years, with bonuses that could push the total to $50million. News broke just a few minutes ago that he'd remain in Portland. However, the writing seemed to be 'on the wall' for some time now: that the Trailblazers had no intention of letting him go. Blazers GM Neil Olshey says that they were never going to not bring Nicolas back. Olshey also said that Batum called him, without his agent's or Minnesota's knowledge to tell him he didn't say those things and he was told to say those things. 'Those things' being, that he wanted to play in Minnesota and wouldn't be happy back in Portland. Ultimately, it was to drive up the price. I guarantee that Batum won't mind being back in Portland, in the end this was all about getting paid and by making $10-12million a year over the life of the deal, I'd say he did just that! Now the Timberwolves can FINALLY move on. They'll be looking at a number of other free agents. Expect to hear news on: Ronnie Brewer, Courtney Lee, Greg Stiemsma and Jordan Hill in the next couple days. I would also expect the deals for Brandon Roy and Alexey Shved to become official sometime, very soon. Until then, thanks for reading HOWL and GO WOLVES!
