Year-Round News & Updates on the Minnesota Timberwolves
This one sounds all to familiar. Perhaps that's because the Lakers were asking the Wolves for Kevin Love in exchange for Gasol last season.
Now, there's been some reported talks about a deal that would send TWolves rookie Derrick Williams & "other pieces" to the Lakers in exchange for Pau Gasol. I understand the Wolves are maxed out with forwards and bringing in Gasol would make for a VERY lethal frontcourt alongside Love, but there are so many negatives that outweigh the positives. 1.) Williams is 19. Gasol is 31. Williams has a load of potential. Gasol has a few elite years left. We've literally only seen the tip of the iceberg for D-Will. We already know what Gasol can do and he's not going to get any better...just worse. 2.) The Timberwolves frontcourt doesn't seem to be the problem with the emergence of Nikola Pekovic. Pek may never be a superstar, maybe not even an all-star, BUT if the Wolves can get 10pts & 8rebs a night from Pek with the occasional 20-12 games, why is Kahn concerned with grabbing another big man? The Timberwolves three centers are: Pekovic, Milicic & Miller, between the three of them they're all paid right around $5million a year. That's $15million a year committed to these guys for at least one more season (Miller has one more year after this season, Darko & Pek have two). 3.) The Timberwolves thinking is that they can convince Gasol they're on the up-and-up and he'll be enticed to play alongside fellow Spaniard & friend Ricky Rubio. I could definitely see that happening. 4.) Shouldn't Kahn's focus be on trading for a starter-capable shooting guard? The Wolves are in desperate need of a shooter at the off-guard spot. Even if it's a spot-up shooter that can rain threes on a quick pass from Rubio, a-la Anthony Morrow, Nick Young, Courtney Lee or J.J. Redick. Or if they opt to make a trade for a solid all-around shooting guard like DeMar DeRozan, O.J. Mayo, Ray Allen, Kevin Martin, Eric Gordon or Andre Iguodala. I hope that David Kahn realizes that there are other needs and is looking into trades for shooting guards rather than a big man. I think the TWolves will be active up to the deadline, but I'd say there's a good chance Kahn waits until the offseason to sign a guard. That's all for now. Thanks for reading HOWL and GO WOLVES!
